How to Build Someone Else’s Self-Esteem

Many people have at least one friend who exhibits the classic signs of low self-esteem. Those signs including being needy, constantly looking for reassurance, becoming defensive when asked for an opinion, or being constantly anxious. There are many signs of low self-esteem but these are the most common. So, as a friend of a person with low self-esteem, how do you build them up? How do you help someone build their self-esteem? Read on to find some strategies.

Build Self-Esteem through Awareness

The first thing you have to do before building up someone’s self-esteem is understand that their feelings are very real. As much as you may think they are over exaggerating their feelings and emotions, they are not. These feelings are legitimate and really influence the way that they interact with the world. If you are aware of their feelings, you can give them the attention that they need. People with low self-esteem need to know that people sincerely care.

Build Self-Esteem through Compliments

One of the easiest ways to help someone build their self-esteem is to give them sincere compliments. It is one of the easiest things to do. Do you like that person’s outfit? Tell them. Did they do a good job on something? Tell them. Do you generally like something about their personality? Tell them. That kind of reassurance helps build the self-esteem of people who need it.

Build Self-Esteem through Inclusion

Another way to help build a person’s self-esteem is to include them in your activities. Those with self-esteem issues are not always shy. That is a common misconception. Feeling like they are a part of a group is a great way to help boost their self-confidence. Invite them to watch a movie with you and your friends. Invite them for dinner and drinks. Invite them to a backyard barbecue. No matter the occasion, if you enjoy their presence, invite them along.

There are many different ways to help build someone’s self-esteem. But helping them build it through awareness of their feelings, compliments, and through inclusion are three of the easiest ways to help. Self-esteem issues affect both men and women of all ages. The most important thing you can do to help is to be sincere in your thoughts and actions. The worst think you can do is to let them know you are only trying to help out of pity.
